Julio Torres is originally from Estelí, Nicaragua. He discovered his love of poetry at the age of ten, while preparing for the September 15th event where he would recite a poem about his country's independence. Julio studied at the Estelí School of Agriculture and Livestock and, in 1976, graduated as an Agronomist and Veterinary Technician. In 1977, he traveled to the United States as a scholarship recipient, working for a year on a farm.

Upon returning to Nicaragua in 1978, he worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock on an inspection and eradication program for a disease affecting coffee plantations in his country. A year later, in 1979, he returned to work on the farm in Sumner, Washington. Later, with his wife, he moved to California, where he worked for a company that produced electronic parts and in a factory that manufactured motorized wheelchairs. In 1994, he returned to Washington State, where he currently resides, and worked at a company that designed meteorological products.

For the past twelve years, Julio has worked for Boeing, performing aviation systems testing.
